Welcome to PostCloud

A podcast about the future of technology and the people who are creating it. We are two tech veterans that love to talk about the evolution of the cloud and the people who are making it happen. We get together every 2 weeks to talk to folks from the industry about their experiences, what they're building, and how their customers are using the cloud in new ways. Join us as we explore the future of cloud technology!

Episodes

Intent Based Access Control
Nic Vermande from Otterize joins us to talk about permissions and access controls within Kubernetes, what challenges exist, and what a modern approach might be to solving these. Get started with Otterize today by heading over to https://docs.otterize.com.
Vulnerability Free Container Images
In this episode we have our first guest, Adrian Mouat. We chat with Adrian about the evolution of container images, and how we can tackle the seemingly never ending task of vulnerabilities. He talks us through what he's working on at Chainguard, and how developers can get started on their vulnerability free journey!
Storage Arrays
Storage Arrays, an area that both Stephen and Chris spent a lot of time working with through-out their respective careers, but are they still relevant in the modern cloud based business and application?
Kubernetes
This week we talk about Kubernetes. What is it, do you even need it, what you need to know to get started, and things to look out for when you do find yourself running it in production! Stephen and Chris share some of their experiences around working with and on Kubernetes.
Containers
We're talking containers this episode. Stephen and Chris taking us back through some history, why and where did containers start, what their common use case is, why should you even care, and something about samosas?
Databases
Databases, core to almost all businesses and the home to the most important business data. Stephen and Chris discuss databases, specifically SQL and NoSQL. What is NoSQL and why do we need it? What considerations are there when choosing and building NoSQL platforms? What are some common use-cases for NoSQL databases? Do we still need SQL in this modern cloud native era?
IOPS
Stephen and Chris talk about IOPS! What are they, a bit of history behind them, and a bit of a chat about how best to get a number when you're asked how many you need! Definitely something that catches many out, both in private and public cloud scenarios. Undersizing your IOPS can definitely have a major negative impact on your apps!
Network Link Aggregation
Link aggregation can seem complex, but it's a powerful tool for increasing network throughput and redundancy. In this episode, Stephen and Chris discuss the benefits and challenges of link aggregation, as well as a few gotchas to look out for, and how it can be used to improve network performance.
Pilot - Part 2
In this, part 2 of our pilot episode, Stephen and Chris continue the discussion about DevOps, Digital Transformation, and other topics and challenges we've see in the adoption and maturing of cloud, both public and private.
Pilot - Part 1
In this, part 1 of our pilot episode, Stephen and Chris talk about the technology evolution we've experienced as virtualisation matured and we became part of the early cloud adoption. We compare the challenges in public and private cloud, what objections we've seen to it's adoption. We'll pickup the conversation in part 2 when we cover DevOps and Digital Transformation.

About Us

We are two tech veterans that have experienced the evolution of the cloud in different ways. We both more-or-less started on the infrastructure side, spending our days in the data center racking big hunks of metal and connecting everything together.

Stephen Howell
Stephen has designed and worked on solutions for virtualisation both large and small, VMware and Linux. Spent some time at VMware and helped bring new companies into the fold during the mergers and acquisitions phase. He has since been at the forefront of developing on-prem Kubernetes based solutions and declarative management platforms. In his spare time he builds radio controlled quadcopters and briefly pretends to be a bird before crashing them.
Chris Kranz
Chris was lucky enough to become one of the first 50 world wide to achieve the VCDX, but shortly after entered the world of DevOps and Cloud. He spent a few years as an independent consultant, helping end-users build cloud platforms, do digital transformations, and generally helping with DevOps and Cloud adoption. Then he moved across into the start-up vendor world, first doing software-defined storage, then moving into cloud cyber-security. Today he does various consulting engagements helping with enablement and cloud adoption, as well as building my own cloud-native software solutions.
